Anatomy & Physiology

Course Description:

The human body is one of the true marvels of nature. Ever wonder what it looks like from the inside? “Anatomy” is the study of the structures of the human body, from the microscopic cells up to…

…whole organ systems. Everything has a purpose and there is no empty space. The organization is obvious from the visual down to the extreme microscopic level.

“Physiology” is the functioning of the various organ systems and tissues within the body, from the circulation of blood, how the kidneys filter and clean blood, to how the brain and central nervous system send chemical and electrical signals to control the entire body.

At 1-on-1 University, you will have the opportunity to dive into your areas of interest with your professor and discuss real clinical medical examples from your professor’s medical career. In the first lesson, you will begin with the cardiovascular system, discussing the heart and its unique muscular structure, the electrical action potentials and the ionic movement necessary for functioning, the EKG and the medication classes used to affect cardiac functioning. In the full course, we’ll review the other organ systems, skin, musculoskeletal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and reproductive, renal, endocrine, and the central nervous system.

Your 1U professor for Anatomy & Physiology is a physician who has taught for over 30 years at Yale University School of Medicine and UConn School of Medicine and has produced extensive material for published textbooks in Genetics and Biochemistry.

…amino acids which form all the proteins necessary to life, how we get most of our energy by burning sugar and converting it into chemical energy, and to the structure of DNA, how it is created from smaller molecules to maintain and pass on to our offspring all the information necessary to be a living human being.

As an introduction, you and your professor dive into the biochemistry and functions of amino acids. The 20 amino acids in humans make up every protein and enzyme necessary for life within our bodies. Amino acids have been found in meteorites from outer space and can be created from simple chemicals such as ammonia, water, carbon dioxide and lightning.

Your professor will tailor the course according to your background and your interests, focusing more on the 3D nature of organic molecules as well as molecular structure and bonding if you have not yet taken organic chemistry, while making more use of your understanding of the molecular interactions if you have a background in organic chemistry.

...aspect of what makes each of us human, and distinctly different from every one of the 6 billion other human beings. Everything from the color of our eyes, to our risk of developing cancer, what our children will look like, and every function within our bodies is coded in our genetic material. Our genes hold all the information necessary for us to live, to function, and to pass along our uniqueness to our children. The human genome has now been completely mapped, and contains about 3 gigabits of information, enough to compose over 25,000 individual genes, and produce more than a million different proteins needed for life. As an introduction to the course, we’ll begin with the structure of DNA and the human genome and explore the process of gene transcription.
